What are the most common questions people ask about your phone companionship service?

Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is Phone A Friend in the Heartland?
We are a social connection service that matches seniors with friendly, consistent companions for scheduled phone conversations. Our goal is to reduce isolation and bring joy through genuine human connection.

How is this different from a "wellness check"?

Most wellness checks are 2-minute automated calls to see if you're okay. Our calls are social sessions focused on your stories, interests, and hobbies. We aren't just checking on you; we are connecting with you.

Is this a medical service?

No. We are a non-medical, social-only service. We do not give medical advice, manage medications, or provide mental health therapy. We are simply "a friend on the line."

Will I talk to the same person every time?

We believe consistency is the key to real friendship. You will be matched with a dedicated primary companion who learns your stories and remembers the names of your family members. While your primary companion may occasionally change as our 'Heartland family' grows, we ensure a warm and seamless introduction so your story never misses a beat."

Can I cancel at any time?

Yes. Membership fees are billed monthly and are non-refundable. You may cancel your membership at any time to prevent future billing. In the event of a medical emergency that prevents service, please contact us to discuss account adjustments. We want this to be a source of joy for your family, not stress.

Are there any things people often misunderstand about what you offer, or what you don't offer?

We provide a friendly voice and consistent social chats. Enjoy shared stories, memories & community news. Establish meaningful connections & trust. Offer encouragement & a reliable, caring ear. Conduct periodic scheduled check-ins.
What We Do Not Do: provide medical assessment, advice, or reminders; administer treatments or provide health-related care; offer legal advice or counsel; provide financial advice or money-related guidance; perform caregiving or manage emergencies (please call 911 for emergencies).

Can I get an update on how the calls are going?

Absolutely. Depending on your plan, we provide weekly or monthly "Heartbeat Updates"  summaries via our family portal, so you can stay connected to your loved one's mood and stories.

What steps do people usually need to take to sign up for your service?

Call for a free 15-minute phone conversation to get started.

Are the calls recorded?

Yes, for quality and safety purposes. We respect the dignity of every senior and keep all personal stories confidential with our service.

What do people typically want to know about the calls themselves, like how long they last or how often they happen?

What do we talk about? We use "legacy prompts" to talk about their history, discuss current events, or chat about their favourite hobbies. We tailor every conversation to the seniors' specific interests based on the intake form you provide.  Calls range from a 15 to 20-minute "wellness hello" to a 45-minute deep dive social session.

What if my loved one doesn't answer the phone?

Safety is our priority. If we cannot reach them after three attempts within 30 minutes, we immediately contact the designated family member to alert them.
